Phormium 'Carousel' (New Zealand Flax) - This New Zealand Flax cultivar is noted for its multi-colored foliage. Growing to 3 feet tall, it has slightly arching, broad 2-3 inch wide green-bronze leaves that are striped with shades of pink and orange. Plant in full sun to light shade. Can tolerate fairly dry conditions (coastal) but looks best with occasional to regular irrigation. Hardy to 15-20 F. This cultivar was recently introduced into cultivation in the United States from a South African nursery, and its long-term ultimate size and performance in the garden is still unknown. Its appears to be a bit pinker than 'Maori Queen', particularly along the leaf margins and it has narrower foliage. With its bright color and apparent smaller size, this cultivar attracted our attention but we only grew it in 2003 as it was very similar to others already in production.

The information about Phormium 'Carousel' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant.
