Nandina domestica 'Gulf Stream' (Gulf Stream Heavenly Bamboo) - A beautiful small shrub that differs from its parent, the cultivar Nandina domestica 'Compacta' in its unique ascending growth habit which gives the plant an upward-reaching appearance. The branchlets and foliage are much more dense and compact than the 'Compacta' cultivar which has a more open, descending, willowy appearance. The new variety is dwarf and compact and branches freely from basal and lateral buds giving a full round, erect shape. Moderate to slow growth rate reaching up to 24-30" tall and only 10-14" wide. Perfect for use along walks or used in mass. Discovered at Hines Wholesale Nurseries in Houston, Texas, they held the plant patent number 5,656 issued in February 1986 and which has since expired.
The information about Nandina domestica 'Gulf Stream' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
