Crossandra infundibuliformis (Firecracker Flower) - A tropical shrub that grows to 2-3 feet tall in frost-free locations. It has 3 to 5 inch long acuminate wavy leaves and 5 to 6 inch tall spikes of salmon-colored tubular flowers that have spreading lobes. Plant in part shade to full sun and irrigate regularly in a medium well-drained soil. This plant is often used as a house plant or hedging plant in tropical climates and will remain rich and green only in the warmest winter California gardens - otherwise enjoy this plant for its spring and summer displays. Stems are hardy to about 30° F. Native to southern India and Sri Lanka this plant is called kanakambaram and its flowers are used with jasmine in flower arrangement and to adorn women's hair.
