Anigozanthos 'Gold Velvet' PP21,178 (Gold Kangaroo Paw) - An evergreen clumping strap-leafed perennial with foliage to 12 to 16 inches tall and flowering stems to 3-4 feet tall bearing large golden-yellow flowers on red stems from spring to fall. Plant in a sunny and open position in the garden in well-drained soils. Irrigate regularly and fertilize in spring (not heavily and keep phosphorus on the low side). Fans only flower once and need to be cleaned out after the flowering period so remove the old leaves down to as low as possible at the end of a season. Care should be exercised that the new emerging fans are not damaged. Hardy and evergreen to about 25 degrees F and will re-sprout after being knocked down by temperatures as low as 20° F. Attracts hummingbirds. This is medium-sized hybrid kangaroo paw was bred by Keith Oliver who crossed an unnamed Anigozanthos humilis x A. flavidus hybrid with an unnamed Anigozanthos pulcherrimus x A. flavidus hybrid. This plant was first released by Lullfitz Nursery of Wanneroo WA in 2005 and was accepted for protection under Plant Breeders Rights on April 29, 2005 and received US Plant Patent PP21,178 on July 27, 2010. San Marcos Growers first received the Velvet Series ('Amber Velvet', 'Gold Velvet' and 'Regal Velvet') to trial in December 2005 and our initial trial plants were still vigorous and looked great after 5 years in their original 5 gallon containers. The Velvet series is marketed in the US by Dig Plants. 'Gold Velvet' is very similar to 'Harmony', an earlier Keith Oliver bred cultivar that we grew for many years, but 'Gold Velvet' has shorter stems which make it a great plant for smaller gardens. Most recently through the work at Ozbreed there has been further work using 'Gold Velvet' as a parent plant in the creation of the mostly yellow flowering Anigozanthos Everlasting Gold ['KP02'] that has an even shorter inflorescence – we currently (2020) growing both of these great Keith Oliver kangaroo paws!
The information about Anigozanthos 'Gold Velvet' PP21,178 displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
