Agapanthus 'Purple Delight' (Purple Delight Lily of the Nile) - An evergreen perennial that forms clumps of 12 to 18 inch long by 1 inch wide arching bright green leaves. In early summer arise numerous 3 foot tall stems bearing heads of dark buds that open to very dark violet-blue funnel-shaped flowers - begins flowering a bit later than other cultivars (mid-July here in Santa Barbara). Plant in full sun to light shade in most any soil type and give occasional irrigation. Should prove hardy and evergreen to 20-25 degrees F. This cultivar produces abundant dark purple flowers and should be great for massing as a groundcover or used individually as an accent plant and has an excellent vase life as a cut flower up to 14 days. This plant was a chance seedling that first flowered in 2001 and was selected by Richard Jamieson of Black Dog Plants, an Agapanthus specialty nursery in Cape Town, South Africa. Our plants first came to us as part of a Agapanthus trial in Spring 2014 from Ball Horticulture.

The information about Agapanthus 'Purple Delight' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant.
