Kniphofia Rockette Yellow ['NI609'] PP24,191 Upright growing to 18 to 24 inches tall and forming clumps to 1 to 2 feet wide with grass-like foliage and solid bright yellow tubular flowers in tight spikes that rise 24 to 30 inches from the ground in spring into summer and then again in the fall. Plant in full to part day sun and give occasional to regular irrigation in a fairly well draining soil. Hardy to below 0 degrees F and useful in USDA Zones 5 through 10. A great plant for a low maintenance mass planting or mixed into the meadow with grasses or planted in the perennial garden and the flowers are very attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies yet seems to not be that attractive to browsing mammals. This plant is similar in form to Kniphofia 'Dwarf Yellow' but with a slightly darker yellow flower and a repeat fall flowering. It comes from a breeding program started in 1996 by Dr Shuming Luo of the University of Sydney that crossed two selections of Kniphofia uvaria. This plant was selected in November, 2006 at Cobbitty, New South Wales, Australia for its upright and vigorous growth habit and for its pale yellow-colored flowers that were freely flowering and repeat flowered over a long period. This cultivar won the Consumer Choice award at the Costa Color Trials in Florida. The name Kniphofia honors Johann Hieronymus Kniphof (1704 -1763), a German physician and botanist. The pronunciation of this genus is often argued about and while most continue to use the easiest to pronounce versions such as ny-FOE-fee-ah or nee-FOF-ee-a, others argue correctly that the name should follow the pronunciation of the name it commemorates. But even for this there are differences of opinion owing to different German regional dialects - one such pronunciation often noted as correct is nip-HOFF-ee-uh while another that is particularly hard to pronounce is k-nip-HOF-ia. Keeping it simple we still use ny-FOE-fee-ah. The specific epithet derives from an old Linnaean name for the plant (Aloe uvaria), from the Latin word 'uva' meaning "grape" in reference to the resemblance to the clusters of the fruits hanging on the stems.
