Mangave 'Purple People Eater' is a 2017 introduction in the Walters Gardens MAD ABOUT MANGAVEŽ Collection of plants and is a hybrid was created by Hans Hansen at Walters Gardens in Zeeland Michigan that is the result of crossing x Mangave 'Bloodspot with Agave pablocarrilloi (AKA Agave gypsophila, Hort.). It received its U.S. plant patent in December 2018. The name comes from the famous 1958 novelty song by actor singer Shelby Fredrick "Sheb" Wooley titled "Purple People Eater" with such lines as "It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater, one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater, Sure looks strange to me!".
