x Mangave 'Night Owl' PP38,403 (Night Owl Mangave) - A dramatically dark-leafed rosette forming succulent with solitary very symmetrical rosettes up to 1 foot tall by almost 2 feet wide. The broad arching recurved leaves undulate to show off the interestingly toothed margins and are a glaucus gray color so heavily covered with dark purple spots that the leaves appear nearly black - this is the darkest of the Mangave hybrids to date.
Plant in full to half day sun in a well-drained soil and give occasional to regular irrigation. This plant is noted to have a very similar habit to the very attractive Mangave 'Silver Fox' but with near black leaves.
Mangave 'Night Owl' was the result of hybridization work by Hans Hansen in November 2015 at Walters Gardens in Zeeland Michigan. It is the result of crossing Mangave 'Silver Fox', itself a hybrid between Mangave 'Bloodspot' and Agave pablocarrilloi, as the seed parent with Mangave 'Inkblot', a hybrid between Manfreda undulata, Mangave maculosa and Agave macroacantha, as the pollen parent. It had a US Plant Patent application filed on it in April 2021 and was a 2020 introduction in the Walters Gardens MAD ABOUT MANGAVEŽ Collection of plants that we first received in July 2020.
