Combretum fruticosum planted in San Marcos Growers garden |
|
This tropical American
vine is evergreen and can grow to 12-20 ft tall. The light green somewhat leathery foliage
is smothered by the orange and yellow flowers from summer through fall. The flowers, in opposite
4-6 inch long clusters emerge from small tight yellow buds into a flush of toothbrush-like flowers,
first yellow then aging to orange. A succession of bloom occurs so that the vine has a multi-colored
appearance. It is hardy and evergreen to 26° F but can tolerate temperatures to below 20 degrees F
with a little damage. Plant in full sun and give occasional to little water. A great vine for a fence or
as a large espalier. The entrance to the Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia is graced by a beautiful
specimen of this plant.
