Dampiera trigona 'Purple Wire' (Angled-stem Dampiera) - A dwarf tufting slender perennial to 2 feet tall with bright green angular wiry stems and narrow lance shaped leaves. The blue-violet flowers, nearly 1 inch wide with yellow centers, are held singly or in pairs on long peduncles at the stem tips from spring through summer. Plant in full to part sun in a reasonably well-draining soil and irrigate regularly to occasionally. Since this plant has not yet been widely grown we do not have a lot of cold tolerance data for it; Only soft new growth was harmed at 25°F at Rosendale Nursery in Watsonville during the January 2013 freeze and in the Encyclopaedia of Australian Plants by Rodger Elliot and David Jones it is listed as "Hardy to most frosts". In John Wriggly and Murray Fagg's Australian Native Plants it is rated with an "H", meaning it is hardy, which is defined in this book as being able to handle temperatures past -7°C (19.4°F) at the Australian National Botanic Garden in Canberra. To be safe and until we can confirm this, we list it as hardy to 25°F and likely a bit lower. Trim after flowering to promote generation of new stems. Noted as particularly attractive to gophers so plant in a wire basket; also makes a great container plant. This plant is native to Jarrah Forest and Swan Coastal plain along the coast in the Darling District on the southwest tip of Western Australia. The name for the genus honors William Dampier (1651–1715), an English explorer who circumnavigated the earth three times and was one of the first to explore parts of New Holland (Australia). He is often called the first natural historian of Australia. The specific epithet from the Latin word 'trigon' meaning "3 angled" or "triangular" in reference to the stem of this plant. This selection (Dampiera trigona UCSC# 2000.91) was named and introduced by the University of California Santa Cruz Arboretum's Koala Blooms Australian Plant Introduction Program in 2013 - other possible names considered were 'Purple Wire', 'Party Line' and 'Fiesta'.
