Echinodorus uruguayensis (Aquatic) (Uruguay Amazon Sword) - Aquatic plant with long, narrow, transparent 15 inch long dark-green leaves that emerge from a basal rosette from which rhizomes emerge to spread plant vegetatively. If planted at or near the water surface the leaves are only 4 to 5 inches long. White flowers are produced above the water surface in summer. As this plant grows primarily under water it releases oxygen into the water. In aquariums it is also known to have beneficial influences on the water's chemistry, such as softening the water, or helping to maintain the pH of the water. Echinodorus is Greek; 'Echino' meaning "hedgehog" and 'dorus' meaning "tube" in reference to the plants spiny fruit.
The information about Echinodorus uruguayensis displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
