Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani (Banded Bulrush) - This distinctive rush has thin hollow leaves that have horizontal bands throughout their length. The bands are most prominent on new growth in spring and fade in the late summer prior to the leaves turning brown in the late fall. It can reach 5 feet tall if given ample water. Plant in full sun in water 2-6 inches deep where the banded leaves are back lit from the sun. The common name is sometimes written as bullrush.
The information about Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
