Echinodorus uruguayensis (Aquatic) (Uruguay Amazon Sword) - Aquatic plant with long, narrow, transparent 15 inch long dark-green leaves that emerge from a basal rosette from which rhizomes emerge to spread plant vegetatively. If planted at or near the water surface the leaves are only 4 to 5 inches long. White flowers are produced above the water surface in summer. As this plant grows primarily under water it releases oxygen into the water. In aquariums it is also known to have beneficial influences on the water's chemistry, such as softening the water, or helping to maintain the pH of the water. Echinodorus is Greek; 'Echino' meaning "hedgehog" and 'dorus' meaning "tube" in reference to the plants spiny fruit.
