Nematolepis frondosa 'Elizabeth' (Leafy Phebalium) - A narrow, upright shrub to 6 ft or more with dark green oval leaves with silver backs. Small, starry, glistening white flowers bloom late winter into spring. Both foliage and flowers have a spicy, fruity fragrance and are useful in flower arrangements. This plant takes shearing well and makes a good hedge. Best in part shade with well-drained soil. Requires occasional to little irrigation. Hardy to 20°F. A selection of the species which is a rare plant found only in a restricted area in East Gippsland, Victoria at about 3,000 ft. We originally received this plant as Phebalium frondosum 'Elizabeth' as part of th UCSC Koala Blooms Introduction. San Marcos Growers grew this plant from 2006 until 2008 and it may still be available from one of the other UCSC Koala Bloom partners (Rosendale Nursery, Suncrest Nursery, Monterey Bay Nursery and Native Sons Nursery).
The information about Nematolepis frondosa 'Elizabeth' displayed on this web page is based on our research conducted in the nursery's horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also include observations made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens we have visited, as well how the crops have performed in containers in our nursery field. We will also incorporate comments we receive from others and welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant. |
